Environmental and Social Justice sandpit event

Professor Rebecca Hoyle, Associate Vice-President Interdisciplinary Research, will host the next interdisciplinary research sandpit on Wednesday 29 November 2023 (09:15-16:30), at Wide Lane Sports Grounds.

The Environmental and Social Justice sandpit will bring together potential collaborators from across the university to share research interests and ideas. We aim to create connections and begin conversations between researchers from diverse disciplines and perspectives, leading towards ideas for potential new research projects and grant applications.

The Environmental and Social Justice sandpit aims to address the unequal distribution of environmental, societal and economic harms and benefits among communities and people. This sandpit aims to explore how such harms and benefits arise, their differential impacts on different communities and people, and pathways to addressing injustices. We welcome researchers focused on any aspect of these issues, from documenting specific injustices to innovations responding to the climate crisis.

We are particularly keen to foster new connections between colleagues in the arts and social sciences and those in the physical and natural sciences and engineering.

At the end of the event participants will be invited to bid for funding from a pot of £30K to support innovative pilot projects emerging from the event.

If you would like to take part in the sandpit, please complete the expression of interest form by Wednesday 8 November 2023.  We will confirm participation by Wednesday 15 November.

The sandpit is open to research and academic staff at the University of Southampton. We welcome participants from all disciplines and backgrounds. This event offers an opportunity to create new interdisciplinary connections and explore new ways of working. An interest in interdisciplinary research and a willingness to explore areas outside of your own expertise is important.
