Call for PhD projects for our new Medical Innovation Fund

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations (ODAR) is fundraising for the new Medical Innovation Fund. The funding will support people and equipment with the aim of driving medical innovation to tackle the world’s greatest medical challenges.

The Doctoral College is pleased to be able offer Doctoral Scholarships as part of the Medical Innovation Fund. Expressions of Interest are sought from investigators who have projects they would like considered for funding.

The research projects must:

  1. Demonstrate the ambition and feasibility needed for an innovative project that addresses one or more of these core themes: cancer, dementia and infectious diseases.
  2. Be centred in Medicine but inherently interdisciplinary; bringing together a collaborative supervisory team (minimum 3 members) where the role of different disciplinary expertise is intrinsic to the design and delivery of the project. This may link medicine with engineering, social sciences, artificial intelligence, data science, mathematical modelling or another discipline in the University.

To propose a PhD project, please complete this form no later than 17:00 on 23 November. All projects will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary panel. Successful projects will be compiled into a brochure by ODAR to support fundraising for doctoral student recruitment late in 2024, with a study start date in September 2025.

Terms

Funding will support fees for UK domiciled students, stipends that match at least the minimum UKRI award and an enhanced Research Training Support Grant (RTSG). Funding will be for 48 months full-time or part-time pro-rata equivalent.

If you have any questions about proposing a PhD project for the fund, please email the Doctoral College.
