Message from the Vice-Chancellor

I know many in our community continue to be very deeply affected by the escalating loss of life in Israel and Gaza, and the unfolding humanitarian crisis. Over the last few weeks I have received heartfelt messages from a number of you with direct connections with the region, and I share your horror at the scenes that we have all witnessed, and the devastating impact on civilian populations.

I have been heartened that at a time when tensions and emotions are inevitably heightened, we as an inclusive community are embodying the values and behaviours that unite us, and not divide us. But I know many in our community are greatly, and rightly, concerned about the rise in Antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents seen in some areas. I repeat my pledge that we will ensure that all members of our community feel safe, and that we will not hesitate to take swift and decisive action against any threats to our Jewish or Muslim students and staff, or to any other members of our community.

I know many of you are also dismayed, as I am, at the growing politicisation and polarisation of the debate around free speech, especially on university campuses. Freedom of expression is a fundamental cornerstone of our institution, and one as a sector we must defend. We will always ensure that we are a space in which our students and staff can freely and respectfully express their lawful views, whilst ensuring that all members of our community feel safe, supported and included.

Watching and reading the news these days, whether from the Middle East, Ukraine or so many other areas of conflict and human tragedy, can be distressing and traumatic to many. We do have a range of support available to our students and staff – please do reach out if you need to.

With best wishes,

Mark

Mark E. Smith
Vice-Chancellor
