The Doctoral College is pleased to announce a suite of PhD scholarships and an EU fee waiver to help talented researchers undertake doctoral study with us.
We know that finding the funding to do a PhD can sometimes be a cause of concern for potential researchers, so we hope these schemes will encourage PGRs to consider Southampton for their doctorate.
Innovation and Social Impact scholarships
The Innovation and Social Impact scholarships are for researchers who want to drive social impact from their research through influencing policy, commercialising the outputs of their research or becoming a startup founder.
The Innovation and Social Impact scholarships are comprised of two streams:
- Innovation – for students with an interest in enterprise activities or creating startups
- Social Impact – for students with an interest in knowledge exchange and social impact
Each scholarship comprises a £20,000 per annum tax-free stipend for 3.5 years, with full UK fees paid and an annual researcher training and support grant of £1,000 per year.
Black Futures scholarships for UK Black students
The University offers a prestigious Black Futures scholarship scheme, for talented UK-domiciled Black and mixed-Black heritage students who want to pursue a PhD at Southampton.
Each scholarship comprises a £20,000 per annum tax-free stipend for 3.5 years, with full UK fees paid and an annual researcher training and support grant of £1,000 per year.
The Black Futures scholarships are open to applicants who:
- are eligible for home fees
- have Black or mixed Black heritage
- and have applied for a research postgraduate programme at Southampton starting in the 2024/25 academic year
EU fee waivers for EU and Horizon-associated countries
The University of Southampton is also introducing a new programme to support the reassociation of the UK with the Horizon Europe programme.
The University will apply a fee waiver – equivalent to the difference between overseas and UK fees – for PGRs with the nationalities of Horizon-associated countries commencing their doctoral studies in the 2024-25 academic year.
This means that from 2024-25, the fees payable by new postgraduate research students with eligible nationalities will be the same as those for equivalent UK students.
Presidential bursaries for overseas researchers
For overseas researchers outside of the EU or Horizon-associated countries, the University is offering presidential bursaries to join us this year. These bursaries will cover the fee difference between UK and overseas fees, and are open to all overseas candidates.
