Winter Festival – the highlights

On Tuesday 28 November, the Winter Festival saw Highfield Campus come to life with various festive activities designed to welcome the start of the festive period.

The afternoon started with various games and activities around Highfield Interchange. Students stopped by between lectures and seminars to get involved – there were traditional market games, as well as curling, a popular winter sport which had all available slots taken very shortly after bookings went live.

Meanwhile, students who preferred the crafty side of winter traditions joined a wreath-making workshop, where they learnt to make their own wreaths.

As the afternoon went on Hartley Bear made an appearance, meeting students and taking full advantage of the photo opportunities on offer. SUSU societies added to the atmosphere with festive performances on the Redbrick, and food vendors warmed everyone up with delicious treats.

The lights switch-on was introduced by Vice-President Education and Student Experience Professor Deborah Gill and SUSU President and honorary Father Christmas Ed Brooker. The switch-on saw the University community come together to count down to the main event, when the lights lit up Highfield Campus.

Father Christmas Ed Brooker also joined students for some photos, with snow making a surprise appearance enjoyed by everyone.

Following the switch-on, students joined SUSU for an interactive session of building and decorating their own gingerbread houses.

The Winter Festival ended with the SUSU Festive Quiz, hosted by Father Christmas Ed Brooker and his elf, VP Activities Amy Moir. Students put their seasonal knowledge to the test, with team Biogirls crowned as victors.
