Hanukkah starts today

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a major Jewish holiday. This year, celebrations begin on the evening of Thursday 7 December 2023, and end on the evening of Friday 15 December 2023.

People celebrate Hanukkah by lighting candles on a menorah (a nine-branched candlestick) as a reminder of the holy lamp staying lit for eight days despite having only enough oil for one night. Each night, an additional candle is lit and many Jewish families sing Hanukkah songs after the lighting.

“The Hanukkah message emphasises the power of light. Each good deed that we perform adds another ray of light and hope, making a ripple effect of change for a better world.” – Rabbi Zalman Lewis, the University’s Jewish Faith Advisor.

As Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of the oil, it is traditional to eat fried foods such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (donuts) during the holiday.

The Jewish Hanukkah festival celebrates the radiant glow of the Menorah light, symbolising resilience, hope, and light over darkness.” – Dr Gil Dekel, Learning Technologist.
