Why postgraduate study at Southampton might be right for you

If you are in the final year of your undergraduate degree, now is a good time to start considering your next move, including postgraduate study. Whether or not you have looked into a master’s degree or PGCE teaching training course, here are some reasons to consider staying on for further study at Southampton.

Why I should stay at Southampton

Postgraduate studies not only allow for deeper specialisation in your academic field of interest, but it also enhances your career prospects and personal development. Continuing to study at Southampton not only ensures you stay in a research-led, Russell Group community, but the familiar surroundings will allow you to maintain relationships with friends, peers, and teaching staff, and remove the stress of starting afresh somewhere new.

This year, the University will guarantee a conditional offer for final-year undergraduates who meet the requirements of their chosen master’s programme. Exclusions to some programmes may apply, such as where an interview or portfolio is required and those with capped placement numbers.

There are over 200 postgraduate course options, and PGCE courses for both primary and secondary teacher training, where you will have access to expert academics and world-class facilities. Talk to a careers advisor for tailored support or consider speaking with your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) to gain an academic perspective too.

Funding available

There are a number of funding options available to support your postgraduate endeavors:

  • Vice Chancellor’s Progression Scheme – New to the University for final-year undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds, this scheme is a comprehensive support package which includes a £5,000 bursary, specialist career coaching, pastoral and academic support, networking opportunities, and help with applying for a PhD in the future. Find out if you are eligible for the Vice Chancellor’s Progression Scheme and apply via MyCareer by Sunday 28 April 2024.
  • PGCE Bursaries – You may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship depending on the subject you are training to teach, which do not need to be paid back. Discover more about PGCE funding at an upcoming PGCE Open Evening or via the Government website.
  • If you do not receive one of the above funding supports, then as a current student you may be entitled to a 10% discount off your course.
