Richard will continue to attend the group as a member and will be focusing on supporting other universities and institutions in their efforts to also become Disability Confident through validation.

Wendy Appleby, Vice-President (Operations) and Chair of the Disability Steering Group says:

“This role is a great opportunity to make a difference to the people in our University as we take forward our Strategy’s ambitions for equality, diversity and importantly being an inclusive community. Your insight and experience will improve our decision-making, ensuring that we are authentic and listen to the voices of our disabled staff in everything we do.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks and gratitude to Richard Cartwright for his exemplary leadership of the Group and I am delighted that we will continue to benefit from his experience after he steps down.”

One of the most recent successes of the Steering Group is the renewal of our Disability Confident Leader status – we are one of only two Russell Group universities to have achieved this status, and this sets a great foundation for the next exciting phase of work.

Richard will be looking back at his time as co-chair and will reflect on the progress made with disability inclusion at our University in a feature in the January 2024 edition of Staff Matters.
