Where to study – Semester one 2023/24

With the exams and assessments period fast approaching, here is a reminder of study spaces old and new that you can use in the next few weeks and beyond.

The Sir James Matthews study area

If you would like to study in Southampton City Centre, the brand-new study area in the Sir James Matthews (SJM) building is now open. Located in Guildhall Square, SJM offers approximately 200 study spaces on the lower ground floor for both individual and group study, with laptop loans also available for up to a week and a Tech Hub offering in-person IT support.

The SJM study area will be open from 08:00-20:00, Monday to Friday, and can be accessed only by using your student ID card. The building is a two-minute walk from the Cenotaph bus station in Southampton City Centre.

Watch the video below to get a quick tour of the new space.

Our campus libraries

Depending on what location suits you best, we have four campus libraries where you can study: Hartley Library on Highfield Campus, the Health Services Library at the Southampton General Hospital, the National Oceanographic Library near the City Centre, and the Winchester School of Art Library in Winchester.

While Hartley Library is open 24/7 during this period, you can check the opening times for the other libraries via the Library website. Hartley Library, the Health Services Library and the National Oceanographic Library are also open during the weekends.

If you need any help during your library visit, you can either ask library staff or contact them using the online chat.

Other study spaces

  • The Centenary Building (Building 100) study areas on Highfield Campus are open 08:00–20:00, Monday to Friday during the exam period, and 12:00–19:30 at the weekends up until Sunday 21 January.
  • The Student Hub Hangout Space in Building 37 on Highfield Campus is a relaxing environment with various seating and spaces that you can use every day from 08:00-22:00. Please note that you will need your ID card to access Building 37 after 18:00 and at weekends.
  • Your Students’ Union on Highfield Campus has plenty of spaces for studying or relaxing, including the Below Deck area, The Bridge and the Veg Out Space. Visit the SUSU website for building and outlet opening hours.
  • Avenue Campus has study spaces available on level two of Building 65 and is open seven days a week from 07:30 to 23:00.

Look after yourself

As we head into a particularly busy period of the year, please do prioritise your wellbeing by taking regular breaks. There will be a number of free activities to help you unwind during this period – look out for the Zen Bus, which will be visiting some of our halls of residence this month, and keep an eye on the My Southampton app and SUSSED for more information coming soon.

Don’t forget, The Student Hub are always here for you if you are ever overwhelmed or need support. You can speak to an advisor via online chat, by email, or call at any hour on 02380 599 599. The team are also available in person on Highfield Campus, Avenue Campus, as well as at Winchester School of Art and the Sir James Matthews building – visit The Student Hub website for opening times
