Reminders for your in-person assessments – Semester one 2023/24

The main exams and assessments period starts today, Monday 15 January, with many in-person exams happening in the next two weeks. Below are a few reminders to help you avoid unnecessary stress on the day:

Before the exam starts

  • Bring your physical student ID with you, as invigilators will need to check it at the start of your exam. Please note that attendance of exams will be recorded, and you may be contacted by The Student Hub if you are absent without having already let us know.
  • Please enter the exam room quietly. If you are waiting outside your exam room, please be mindful of the environment around you, there may be several exams taking place around you.
  • If you need a calculator or a dictionary, double-check that you are using approved models. Calculators and dictionaries are checked by invigilators before the exam starts.
  • Invigilators will show you where to store your bags, coats, and other personal belongings in the exam room, so make sure you follow their instructions. Check that all your devices are switched off (your phone, smartwatch, etc.) and ensure they are left in your bag.
  • Read all the instructions and information on your desk and write your name and student ID where required.
  • Do not open the question paper or write anything in the answer book until the invigilator tells you that the exam has started – this is when your allocated time begins. Even if this is slightly later than initially scheduled, don’t worry, you will always be given the full amount of time.

 When the exam finishes

  • Double-check you have followed all instructions on your exam paper, including writing your student ID on every answer book you use, or any other instructions from the invigilators.
  •  Your invigilators will tell you when your allocated time is finished. You must then stop writing and close all answer books. Remain seated and do not talk, as you are still under exam conditions.
  • Your answer books must be collected by an invigilator before you can leave – otherwise, they may not be marked. Leave all other exam papers or instructions on the desk.
  • When you are notified that you can leave the exam, please collect your belongings and exit quietly.

Remember – the invigilators are there to answer your questions, so don’t hesitate to ask them if you are unsure about any of the instructions or the process.

If you ever feel overwhelmed or need any support outside of the exam, get in touch with The Student Hub, who are here 24/7 to help with any concerns relating to exams or wellbeing. You can contact them via emailonline chat, or by calling 02380 599 599.
