Tips and events for the end of exams and start of semester two 2023/24

The end of exams and start of the new semester may come with a few celebrations and opportunities to unwind. We have put together some tips to help keep yourself and others safe whilst out and about, as well as some events to help you relax.

Safety tips for nights out

  • Stick together with your friends as much as possible both during the night out and on the journey home.
  • Check the UniLink and Bluestar timetables and keep a note of local taxi numbers to hand, whether you’re out in Winchester or Southampton.
  • If you are leaving Highfield Campus late at night, the SUSU Safety Bus is another alternative to get home – it runs regularly until late, taking you from the SUSU Redbrick right to your doorstep. The safety bus is available for students who need to travel back to Winchester. Check out the SUSU website for the full Safety Bus schedule.
  • Going out should be fun but sometimes, situations can become unsafe. Walk Away is an initiative by Hampshire Police to make nights out safer, check the website for more information.
  • If you should need to report an incident, you can use our Report and Support tool – you will then be contacted by an advisor who can help.
  • Check out the Student Safety site for more information and advice on staying safe.

Events

As always you can check the MySouthampton app for upcoming events. You can also check the SUSU events calendar for events all year round, like the Refreshers Fayre.

Looking to the new semester

Where to study

As well as our fantastic libraries, there is also the brand-new study area in the Sir James Matthews (SJM) building. Located in Guildhall Square in central Southampton, SJM offers approximately 200 study spaces on the lower ground floor for both individual and group study, with laptop loans also available for up to a week and a Tech Hub offering in-person IT support.

Check out the campus map to see other locations, including our libraries at Winchester School of Art (WSA), National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), The Health Services Library at University Hospital Southampton and Hartley Library.

Technology and study support

You can apply for a grant between £50 and £300 to go towards equipment needed for your studies – whether that is a new laptop or set of headphones. You may request one or more items of hardware or software in your application. Check if you are eligible for the Technology Grant and other financial support on the University website.

Travelling to University

Getting to and from campus

Check the Unilink bus website for full timetables and routes – the buses cover various points of interest, including Highfield Campus, WSA, Southampton City Centre, NOCS, and halls of residence. The interchange on campus is an easy point of travel.

Securing your bike safely

If you travel by bike, make sure you lock it through the frame and wheels and remove the removable parts. It only takes a few seconds for an unsecured or poorly secured bike to be taken. Visit SharePoint for advice to protect your bike.

24/7 support

If you have any concerns or issues, please contact The Student Hub – your first point of contact for any support and advice relating to fees, accommodation, course administration and more. The SUSU Advice Centre also provides free, independent, and confidential advice and information on practical matters.
