The University’s Sustainability and Resilience Institute is proud to be one of six universities in the world selected for this year’s Universities for Goal 13 Competition, hosted by Siemens Gamesa with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

Open to all undergraduate and postgraduate-taught students, the Universities for Goal 13 Competition is an international team competition to recognise students’ talent in producing creative solutions for energy transition and environmental sustainability.

Aside from the opportunity to contribute to a global cause and make a real impact, participants will receive mentorship from Siemens Gamesa throughout the process and the winning solution will also be presented at the annual International Conference for Sustainable Development in New York (USA) – a remarkable platform to showcase your work on a global stage.

How to get involved

Firstly, read through the Competition Brief and the Rules and Guidelines. Start thinking about a problem related to one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that you want to tackle. Once you start brainstorming, form a team consisting of 3 to 5 students, preferably from different fields of study, to cover the technological, legal, economic and social aspects.

To participate, complete the application form and send it to the Sustainability and Resilience Institute (SRI) by emailing [email protected] before Friday 15 March 2024. If you would like help finding a supervising academic or people to team up, and/or would like to discuss your ideas, please email the SRI for support.

The process

  1. Team up, find an academic to supervise, and apply
  2. Selection – The SRI will select three proposals to advance to the next phase.
  3. Mentorship – Students who advance will have 10 weeks to improve their solutions, assisted by teaching staff and expert mentors at Siemens Gamesa.
  4. Pitch your solution and win – The winning team is selected through an international jury and announced during the International Conference for Sustainable Development. After the awards, the winning solution project will then start implementation using the prize money, assisted and monitored by Siemens Gamesa.
