Our commitment to students without parental and family support

Since 2018, the University of Southampton has worked closely with Stand Alone, a charity that provides support to those who are estranged from their parents and wider family, to help students with their transition to university life.

Stand Alone has recently announced its closure and so its higher education work will be ending. However, the University will honour its Stand Alone Pledge commitment and will continue to provide and improve the provision we offer to our estranged students to ensure they have the best possible chance to succeed at every stage of their student journey.

Available support

At the University and Students’ Union, we offer tailored support to estranged students, including:

  • The University of Southampton Estranged Student Support Package, which includes access to halls 365 days a year, financial support through bursaries and grants, mental health and wellbeing support, and a designated point of contact.
  • Opportunities to work with the University and co-create resources to ensure the voices of estranged students remain embedded in all activity.
  • Independent support from the SUSU Advice Centre for estranged students, open Monday to Friday from 09:00-17:00.
  • The Student Hub is students’ first point of contact for questions and concerns relating to fees, financial support, accommodation, wellbeing, disability, careers and course administration. The Student Hub is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
