Pint of Science Southampton brings the stars behind the latest research to a venue near you

On 13–15 May, the Pint of Science festival will simultaneously bring thousands of scientists and their research out of the lab and into pubs, cafes and cinemas near you. The three-day festival has grown astronomically since its inception, and 2024 will see events in over 25 countries and hundreds of cities around the world. Each night will provide a unique line up of talks, demonstrations and live experiments held in a relaxed and informal environment.

University of Southampton researchers will be speaking at venues across the city, including Stein Garten, The View, Mettricks, Whiskey Blue, The Bridge and Harbour Lights. Tickets are available from the Pint of Science website (pintofscience.co.uk), costing just £5 each. Attendees in Southampton will enjoy a variety of exciting talks including:

Did the universe have a beginning? Are we ready to cure Dementia? And  find out why Corals are Great Chemists.

Alongside the main talks, audience members will be able to take part in the largest ever multi-city pub quiz – in association with interactive quiz company, KwizzBit. Teams will tackle science-themed trivia and go head-to-head with other cities interactively, in the hope of claiming the top spot in their city and across the UK. KwizzBit’s Head of Marketing, Joel Slinn says:

“We’re thrilled to be hosting a national pub quiz competition with Pint of Science for the third year running. It’s a fantastic event that brings the latest scientific discoveries to the public – and we play a small part in creating more engaging and memorable events to the inquisitive minds in attendance.

Playing against other Pint of Science venues across the UK simultaneously creates an entertaining, competitive quiz – and we can’t wait to see who wins!”

Pint of Science founders Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin wanted to bring back the personal touch to science. From three cities back in 2013 to hundreds of cities this year, the festival continues to showcase the brilliant work happening on our doorsteps. Events provide a platform for researchers to share their stories, and audiences an opportunity to ask their questions about science to those directly behind it.

“It’s fantastic to see how a simple idea between a few friends has captured people’s imaginations and pushed scientific research into the spotlight”, says Co-Founder Dr Praveen Paul. “We should all have an opportunity to question and discover the breadth of research that is taking place right here in the UK. None of it would be possible without our enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers who work so hard to bring you a programme packed full of inspiring events, and encourage us all to be curious. The only difficulty is choosing which of the brilliant events to go to!”

Creative Reactions

Following a resounding success at last year’s festival, this year the Southampton festival also includes Creative Reactions, a programme where artists and scientists partner to inspire each other and produce incredible artworks inspired by scientists’ research, such as:

  • Art works (photos, galleries and models of current research in Southampton, from a crochet skeleton to sustainable development in port cities)
  • Exhibitions (workshops, interactive sessions and meet the Sci-Artist sessions)
  • Live performances (including comedy sets from local Science Comedians)

These works break down barriers and encourage creativity for both parties – with breath-taking results.

So come down on Sunday 12th of May to the Harbour Lights Picture House, and meet your local Sci-Artists behind our fascinating exhibitions, attend workshops to hone your own sci-art skills, and watch live performances from local Science Comedians.
