In this year’s QS World Rankings by Subject, six of our subjects are ranked within the Top 50 universities in the world and 12 subjects are within the Top 100.
Accounting & Finance, in 95th place, has made it into the top 100 for the first time and Engineering – Electrical & Electronics improved two places to 70th. There have been improvements from both Earth & Marine Sciences, which moved up one place to 38th, and Geophysics, which climbed one place to 42nd. Nursing is ranked 11th this year and is still our best ranked subject.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith indicated:
“The QS Rankings by Subject this year are positive and encouraging. Congratulations to Accounting and Finance which has improved six places and made it into the top 100 for the first time. It is also noteworthy that Engineering – Electrical & Electronics, Earth and Marine Sciences and Geophysics, also improved their rankings this year.
“To all colleagues, I’d like to thank our staff and students for their excellent contributions which have made these latest achievements possible, especially having so many disciplines in the top 100.”

Southampton has six subjects within the Top 50, same as last year:
- Nursing is ranked 11th, five down from last year.
- Archaeology ranked 36th, three down from last year.
- Earth & Marine Sciences improved one place to 38th.
- Geophysics improved one place to 42nd.
- Geology fell four places to 46th.
- Statistics & Operational Research fell nine places to 48th.
Southampton has 12 subjects ranked within the Top 100, same as last year:
- Physics & Astronomy fell one place to 60th.
- Engineering – Electrical & Electronic improved two places to 70th.
- Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing fell 26 places to 77th.
- Medicine fell 19 places to 81st.
- Accounting & Finance made it into the top 100 for the first time at 95th.
- Engineering – Civil & Structural remains in the 51-100 band.
