Whether you want a quiet place to prepare or prefer to study with friends, there are plenty of spaces available across our campuses as the semester two assessment period draws closer.
You’ll likely already know the Hartley Library on our Highfield Campus, which has several study spots, plus it houses our Academic Skills Hub and subsequent drop-in and café sessions, however, there are various other places for you to take advantage of throughout the city and in Winchester. Here’s a rundown.
Sir James Matthews Building (SJM) – Guildhall Square, Southampton City Centre
Great for; individual study, group study, laptop loans and proximity to the city centre.
The Sir James Matthews building has a brand-new 200-capacity study space on the lower levels, with study pods available for booking and comfy new areas for groups and individuals. Study spaces, including pods, can be booked through the library website. Laptop loans are available and there is also a TechHub on site should you need a hand.
The SJM building has a Student Hub, open 08:00-20:00, Monday to Friday and boasts an onsite café – the Artisan. Located in Guildhall Square it’s close to the town centre and is a few minutes’ walk away from bus stops and Southampton Central train station.
National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) Library – Waterfront Campus
Great for; views of the Solent, library access
The NOCS Library, located on the second floor, offers laptop loans and study spaces both within the library and around the campus, including more private areas. You can easily reach NOCS from Highfield interchange by bus, which virtually drops you at the door. To get a glimpse of the space take a look at the photo tour. Or watch the accessibility route.
The views from the café are a spectacle, as you watch ships come in and out of Southampton waters into the Solent and beyond.
Winchester School of Art Library (WSA) – Winchester Campus
Great for; access to the historic city of Winchester
Our WSA Library offers various study spaces and a vast collection of resources, including books, e-books, print and electronic journals, graphic novels, zines, artists’ films, and archives. It is conveniently situated near Winchester city centre and close to transportation links such as buses. If you’re looking to unwind after your study session, the WSA Campus is near a few picturesque parks and has a great campus café.
Health Services Library – University Hospital Southampton
Great for; quiet study space
Not just for our students studying at the hospital, the Health Services Library at University Hospital Southampton has group study rooms to book for up to two hours, complete with whiteboards and ample space.
There is usually plenty of space for individual study as well. Like our other library sites, you can borrow laptops here for up to a week.
The Hangout Space, The Student Hub, Building 37 – Highfield Campus
Great for; a relaxed study atmosphere, access to The Student Hub
The Student Hub in Building 37 has lots of space for study in the hangout space. There are bigger tables for groups, it’s light and often less busy than other study spaces on Highfield Campus. The Student Hub is on hand if you have any questions regarding wellbeing, disability support, help with accommodation or if you’re feeling stressed or anxious and want to talk to someone, you can speak to our specialist Wellbeing team. You can visit the team in person, or you can choose to chat online or over the phone.
The SUSU Advice Centre is also close by if you need to speak about academic issues and you can find them above The Stags on Highfield campus.
