Clearing 2024: You can help students to secure their place

A level results day on Thursday 15 August will mark the peak of our Confirmation and Clearing activity this year. During these few days in the annual cycle, we will confirm almost 5,000 undergraduate students, handle over 10,000 telephone enquiries, process 1,500 clearing applications, and respond to thousands of emails and social media enquiries.

Once again, we need your help to successfully deliver clearing and support applicants through the process.

By supporting our clearing operation you will make a real difference for those applicants, get to work with colleagues from across the university and have a positive impact on our student numbers for 2024.

We are looking for staff from across the University to work with the Global Recruitment Admissions and Marketing teams during this busy period, full training and support will be given to all volunteers. There are a number of different activities that you may be asked to support with:

  • Clearing Hotline: Taking calls from applicants, recording their application details in an online form and, where possible, making a decision on their application.
  • Web Forms and Clearing Plus: Reviewing applications by applicants via an online form and, where possible, making a decision on their application.
  • Confirmation Hotline: Handling calls from applicants who are (or were) holding an offer at Southampton but who haven’t had their place confirmed.

We are planning to locate our hotline teams on campus. However, our contingency planning includes a remote option, so you should therefore be prepared to work either on campus or from home. Regardless of the location, we’ll be handling calls via MS Teams.

We need around 100 people who can work on Thursday 15 August and a smaller number of staff on Friday 16 August.

Full training will be provided. Should we find ourselves needing to switch from an in-person to a remote operation, we will also support you in the set-up and configuration of Teams prior to the marks release date.

If you are able to support this event, please complete the following form by Friday 7 June, ensuring that you have discussed the commitment first with your line manager.
