Preparing for your appraisal

Appraisals enable an individual’s contribution to be recognised and provide an opportunity to discuss development needs and career aspirations, with the aim of helping every individual to maximise their potential in their role. Every member of staff at the university is entitled to an appraisal.

The appraisal window opens on 1 June 2024 and closes on 15 September 2024.

All staff should:

  • Agree the date for their appraisal discussion with their appraiser.
  • Ensure they have prepared for their appraisal discussion by completing the Appraisee e-learning.
  • Review and reflect on their contribution over the last 12 months.

During the appraisal meeting

  • Discuss with their appraiser:
    • their achievements and any challenges and provide an overall assessment of the contribution for the appraisal year.
    • Discuss any development that may be required.
    • Discuss their career aspirations.
    • Agree some objectives for the new appraisal year.

Following the appraisal meeting

  • Ensure that the ‘overall contribution summary’ page in the 2023-24 year’s appraisal form is completed.
  • Ensure that objectives are recorded in the new appraisal form (2024-25) and saved, but not submitted.

Useful information:

  • Take a look at the new Appraisals Quick Guide for more guidance on holding a quality appraisal conversation.
  • The annual appraisal timeline (appraisal year) is the same for all staff. All appraisal conversations will need to take place between 1 June and 15 September each year.
  • Contribution descriptors will be used to provide an overall assessment of an individual’s contribution.
  • All staff will use the online form in MyView to record the discussion and agree an overall contribution descriptor. An improved, printable version of the appraisal form for staff with limited computer access is available here..
  • A “consistency check”, will be carried out by the appraiser’s line manager (known as the Second Line Reviewer) to ensure fairness and consistency. This will need to be completed by 15 October each year.

A wide range of training and resources are available to support all staff and enable them to fulfil their role in the appraisal process.  Please look through the resources below to identify those that will best support you and your team.
