Join us from 17 – 23 June as we mark Refugee Week.
Across the country people come together to raise awareness, promote understanding, and stand in solidarity with those seeking sanctuary. The aim of Refugee Week is to draw a closer understanding into the challenges and experiences in which refugees and asylum seekers face within our community in Southampton.
In the past, we have had the privilege of engaging in activities such as Lost Homes, New Horizons: Exploring Forced Displacement Through the Power of Education, which was a unique opportunity to hear directly from those who have experienced displacement and resettlement and gain a deeper understanding of the legal and policy frameworks that shape their lives. Other projects such as the Welcome Tree Project, created labels with warm welcome messages for those new arriving in Southampton seeking sanctuary.
This year, we are excited to present a range of activities and events:
- Two talks hosted by the University of Southampton in collaboration with Solent University.
- A Scholarship recipient will be delivering a talk to a local school of Sanctuary (Cantell along with Southampton and Winchester Visitor Group).
On 5 June, the University hosted our Sanctuary Panel visit. Members of the national City of Sanctuary Network came to the University to see our work related to our University of Sanctuary application. This visit was part of the accreditation process to receive University of Sanctuary status.
