Today we’re pleased to mark Social Mobility Awareness Day.
The Social Mobility Network Southampton is highlighting the inspiring stories from university staff as part of the ShareMoments campaign for Social Mobility Awareness Week. You can follow these stories on LinkedIn.
We are also very pleased share how being the first in her family to go to university transformed the life of our Chancellor Justine Greening:
Higher education remains one of the greatest pathways to advance social mobility according to the Sutton Trust. At Southampton we take that responsibility seriously, not only because of our moral conviction, but also as a strategic priority to ensure our organisation is the most reflective and responsive version of itself.
In October, the Social Mobility Network curated a photography exhibition at the John Hansard Gallery to show that working class staff, students, alumni, friends and family of the University had proud working-class roots. The exhibition attracted over 6,000 visitors in its three-month run and is now permanently housed in the Blue Room. Our #ShareMoments campaign will increase visibility of working-class representation and we encourage staff to contribute their own stories using the hashtag this Social Mobility Day. You can follow the campaign on our social media channels (Instagram – @soton_smn, LinkedIn – Social Mobility Network Southampton) or read the stories from our contributors in the July issue of Staff Matters.
