Medical safety reminders for staff

Whilst uncommon, medical incidents do occur on our campuses from time to time and we would like to remind all staff of the resources available to them, and the responsibilities we all hold to keep one another safe.

A green box with white writing reading "first aid" and a white cross sign is mounted on a wall. Boxes of disposable gloves are behind it.

Emergency contact details

It is really important that you store up to date emergency contact details on MyView.  These can be updated at any time and you are encouraged to periodically check that they are still current and update if necessary. This enables colleagues to contact your nominated person quickly and easily in the event of an emergency.

Instructions on how to update emergency contact details can be found in the MyView User Guide.

If you need to access emergency contact details for a member of staff, please contact Ask HR – 023 8059 7547 or extension 27547, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm.

In an emergency

  • Call 999 and request the service you need.
  • Please then Contact Security on 023 8059 3311 or extension 23311.  Security colleagues are all highly trained First Aiders and mental health First Aiders, and are experienced in handling medical incidents. As a reminder, the number for Security is also printed on the back of Staff ID cards. We would encourage all staff to store the Security contact number in their mobile phones in case it is needed.
  • There are a number of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) held at various locations at each campus. You may need an AED if a person is unconscious and is not breathing normally. A list of all AED locations can be found here – please familiarise yourself with the location of one closest to your normal working location. Please dial 999 first before using the AED.

The Health, Safety & Risk SharePoint site has more information on what to do in different kinds of emergencies or incidents on campus, including how to contact departmental First Aiders.

Line Manager responsibilities

As a line manager you have additional responsibilities to the colleagues within your team, to ensure everyone’s safety.

With staff potentially working in different locations and at different times of the day/week, the hybrid working charter and hybrid working risk assessment recommend that managers and colleagues ensure that they know when and where each other are working, arrange to check in regularly and have a plan in place in case of no response.

Please encourage your team members to ensure their emergency contact details are up to date on MyView. Instructions on how to update emergency contact details can be found in the MyView User Guide.

In the event that you need to get hold of emergency contact details for a member of staff, please contact Ask HR by calling 023 8059 7547 or extension 27547, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm.
