Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Internet

Join us to celebrate and commemorate the significant milestone of 50 years of the Internet.

A prestigious event on 15 July, held at the Royal Society in London, co-organised by the Web Science Institute (WSI) and featuring eminent speakers including Dr Vint Cerf, co-inventor of the internet, and University of Southampton’s Dame Wendy Hall.

The afternoon event is open to the public and will begin with words from Dr Vint Cerf in his role as Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, followed by ‘in conversation’ with Mei Lin Fung, Co-Chair and Founder of People-Centered Internet.

The afternoon will then feature a series of panels with eminent speakers that will look back at what the Internet has achieved in the last fifty years and focus on the next generation of the Internet and AI. 

The panel discussions include:

  • The Internet as an Infrastructure – Chaired by Sir David Payne, Professor of Photonics, University of Southampton
  • The Internet as a Facilitator of Opportunity – Chaired by Mei Lin Fung, Chair and Co-founder of People-Centered Internet
  • The Internet and Society – Chaired by Dame Wendy Hall, Regius Professor of Computer Science, University of Southampton, Director of WSI, and Trustee of Web Science Trust.
