Every year as part of our Graduation season, we award a small number of honorary degrees, in recognition of an individual’s inspirational intellectual, creative, or academic achievement, which is valued nationally or globally.
Receiving an honorary degree from the University this year are:
Vinton Cerf, Vice-President and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google, who is a former Stanford professor and former member of the US National Science Board. Vinton is also past President of the Association for Computing Machinery and serves in advisory capacities at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, US Department of Energy, US National Science Foundation, US National Reconnaissance Office, and NASA.
Professor Lucy Chappell, Chief Scientific Advisor with overall responsibility for DHSC research and development and for supporting analysis and life sciences across the department. Lucy is also Chief Executive Officer for the National Institute for Health and Care Research, Professor of Obstetrics at King’s College London, working mainly in clinical trials in pregnancy, and a practicing Consultant Obstetrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Professor Gerd Gigerenzer, who has devoted his career to better understanding how humans make decisions. He is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Director of the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the University of Potsdam, partner at Simply Rational – The Institute for Decisions, and Vice-President of the European Research Council.
