The University is pleased to announce the receipt of planning permission for a new Watersports Centre, replacing the current buildings on the River Itchen site, Swaythling, Southampton.
This transformative project is a key element of the University’s ambitious £40 million investment in sports and recreational facilities, and underlines our commitment to health, wellness and community engagement.
The new buildings will consolidate many of the existing spaces. A new Boat House will provide upgraded modern boat storage and workshop facilities for the University Rowing Club, with new hub space providing storage for other University Clubs and enhanced changing facilities alongside other equipment storage. Both buildings will be situated on higher ground within our site to protect against flooding.
This centre is not only poised to elevate the University’s athletic programmes, but also promises to be a vibrant hub for students, staff, and the local community.
This site is part of a larger vision to enhance the University’s sports infrastructure. Complementing this development is the expansion of our Jubilee Sports and Recreation Centre, set to open on 2 September. The upgraded sports centre will boast brand new squash courts, a climbing and bouldering wall, a Technogym indoor cycling studio, a café, 4 fitness studios and a new fitness suite containing the latest high performing, accessible equipment.
The new Watersports Centre represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to provide world-class amenities for our students and the wider community. This investment ensures that the University is on track to become a leading destination for sports and recreational activities in the region.
Early works have already begun on site, and the new facility is planned to be fully operational by spring 2026.
