Conflicts of interest and personal relationships

Did you know that you have a responsibility to declare any work-related outside interests which could be a conflict of interest?

What does it mean to have a conflict of interest?

A conflict of interest is a set of circumstances that create a risk that an individual’s duties to the University conflict, or could be influenced by a secondary interest, e.g. a personal interest or duties to other organisations or people. Conflicts can also arise from research collaborations (both formal and informal) and funding arrangements so these circumstances should also be considered.

The University Conflicts of Interest Policy outlines the responsibilities of individuals on reporting and managing conflicts of interest. It aims to protect both staff and students, and the University from any potential reputational damage or other liabilities.

The Policy’s aim is to promote a culture of compliance, transparency and accountability in the conduct of the University’s business, preserve its integrity and contribute to a strong reputation.

What do you need to do?

Soon you will be reminded by your faculty/directorate to:

If your line manager considers there is a potential or actual conflict, you will need to discuss and agree with your line manager about how the conflict will be managed and record it in a Conflict Management Plan.

See the Conflicts of Interest Policy and Guidance website for examples of interests that should be declared.

Personal relationships

If you have a personal or intimate relationship with someone who works for or with the University you may need to declare this, depending on your professional relationship. The University strongly discourages relationships with students and these should always be disclosed.
