New policy papers on democracy, AI and the Internet

Researchers at the Web Science Institute (WSI) have published new white papers and policy papers addressing the opportunities and threats of the internet and artificial intelligence in public policy.

As the latest changes in government take shape after this summer’s general election, and new ways of engaging in democratic activities emerge, the impact of new technologies is expected to become increasingly relevant to businesses, policymakers, and consumers.

In a policy paper aiming to improve democratic participation, members of the WSI, led by Dr Matt Ryan, with postgraduate policy associate Adam-Meylan Stevenson, and Dr Ben Hawes, have identified the benefits, limitations, and funding opportunities for the development of new technologies to be used in the public sector.

The broader applications of the internet in democracy are also explored in a separate paper, with researchers highlighting the need for expertise and diligence when considering the impact of new technologies on human rights

Finally, a paper written by Dr Ben Hawes and Professor Dame Wendy Hall explores the priorities of the new UK government when addressing the role of digital technology to inform public policy – specifically, the development of new legislation. As investment in artificial intelligence rises, researchers at the WSI investigate how the latest government might react to a fast-moving tech industry, and the potential for legislative intervention.

Dr Matt Ryan gives his thoughts:

“With so many changes happening in policy, government, and the technology sector in the last few years, when we think about democratic activity, it’s important to guide the development of AI and the internet in a way that supports inclusive, accessible and informed political debate.”
