Southampton Students Competing for Gold in UN Research

We are thrilled to announce a student team from the University of Southampton has advanced to the final of the Universities x Goal 13 global competition.

This competition is sponsored by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy in partnership with the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

The team, named ‘Seeds for Thought: Empowering Children through Hydroponics’, is formed of Enactus students, including first years, who are developing a new system to allow children to grow their own fruit and vegetables with lower carbon emissions than traditional methods. It involves reducing the number of resources needed to grow plants by using hydroponics – the science of growing plants in a water-based solution. The project also seeks to improve wellbeing in children through healthy eating. ‘

Seeds for Thought’ were selected as finalists after fierce competition from the University of Southampton’s other teams and five other universities across the world. The winning team will receive a $10,000 prize and additional support from Siemens Gamesa to bring their project to life.

Winners will be announced in September 2024 during the UN General Assembly alongside the International Conference on Sustainable Development.
