Message from the Vice-Chancellor – Wednesday 7 August

Students may be aware of information circulating online regarding potential planned demonstrations in the city centre this evening (Wednesday 7 August). As a result, it is likely there are those in our community that are feeling unsafe and worried today. As I said in my message shared on Monday, we are a university which prides itself on diversity and inclusivity, and we will do everything within our power to keep you safe in your place of study and ensure you feel seen and supported.

The Leader of Southampton City Council yesterday issued a statement regarding this potential disruption and we will continue to work closely with the City Council, our colleagues at Solent University and the Police during this worrying time.

I remind all students of the support resources available to you. Please contact The Student Hub who can support you in alterations to your study or travel arrangements today to enable you to prioritise your personal safety and wellbeing.

Please report any incidents or events that are of concern to you using Report + Support where appropriate, or to the Police where this is external to the University. If you need immediate support at one of our sites please call University Security on 023 8059 3311 (Ext. 23311).

We would like to encourage our students to avoid any areas that demonstrations are planned, to ensure your safety. Please be aware that there will be some changes to teaching and student services timings today and our city centre buildings will be card access only this afternoon.

Professor Mark E. Smith
President & Vice-Chancellor
