School governor volunteers are transforming education in Hampshire

Since its launch in February 2024, the University’s School Governor Network has helped improve the education of more than 7,500 local children by recruiting and supporting new school governors from across our University community.

Reena Pau and Marco Love-Murelli.

Through two recruitment webinars, in partnership with national education charity, Governors for Schools, 13 members of staff and 37 alumni have applied to become school governors.  These volunteers will use their skills and expertise to help shape educational provision, improve educational outcomes and support local schools through effective leadership.

‘I decided to be a school governor because I wanted to help ensure the best possible education and support for young people in our community. The school has been very welcoming and provided a comprehensive induction. I was also introduced to very excited children on a Friday afternoon!– Marco Love-Murelli, Student Opportunities Coordinator

‘I decided to apply because I wanted to make a concrete contribution to my local primary school. It was really easy to get involved and the chair of governors told me everything I needed to know. My line manager is supportive. I am excited to get stuck in and involved.’ – Reena Pau, Senior Enterprise Fellow

Beyond recruiting new governors, the School Governor Network has cultivated a strong community of school governors, offering platforms and regular meetings for collaboration and for governors to share ideas, and enhance their ability to create meaningful change in schools. The Network has also raised awareness of the critical role school governors play, featuring their contributions in Staff Matters during National School Governors’ Awareness Day, and highlighting the support school governors can access through the University’s special leave policy.

If you’d like to find out more about becoming a school governor, register for one of two webinars taking place at 12:00 and 18:00 on Wednesday 23 October.
