Pay award implementation begins in September pay

We have kept colleagues informed in recent weeks about the progress of the 2024/25 national pay negotiations. The Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) has now advised employers that pay negotiations have concluded, and that participating Higher Education institutions – including Southampton – should proceed to implement the pay outcome.

The pay outcome provides for overall increases of between 2.5% and 5.3% to the spinal points we use at Southampton.

Implementation will be staged, as follows:

  • From this month, backdated to 1 August 2024, the full-time equivalent values of all Level 1 to 7 spine points will increase by £900, relative to their 1 August 2023 values. Those in Level 1a have already received part of this uplift as a consequence of the University honouring the Living Wage Foundation hourly rate of £12 per hour since 1 January 2024.
  • With effect from 1 March 2025, further uplifts will apply, such that the full-time equivalent values of spine points 10 to 22 will increase by a further £300, spine points 23 to 37 will increase by a further £250, and spine points 38 and upwards will receive a sum, variable by pay point, which results in an overall uplift of 2.5% when the two stages of the award are combined.

You can see the effect of these changes on the University’s pay scales here.
