Professor Sera Markoff (University of Amsterdam) will give the annual public lecture organised by the Southampton Theory, Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre. She will tell the fascinating story behind the first images of black holes that were produced in recent years by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHTC).
The title of the lecture is: Observing the unobservable: a multi-messenger view of black holes in the Event Horizon Telescope era
The lecture will take place on Wednesday 23 October at 15:00 in the Turner Sims auditorium. A small number of tickets are still available to book.
Professor Markoff is an internationally recognised expert in compact object/black hole studies. She is a founding member of the EHTC, where she also served as Vice-Chair and as a member of the Science Board. Her research, as well as her public outreach efforts, have been recognised by several prestigious prizes, including being named Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Willem de Graaff Prize for Public Outreach of the Royal Dutch Astronomical Society. As part of the EHTC she also shared several other major prizes such as the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, the Rossi Prize and the Einstein Medal.
The Director of the STAG Research Centre, Dr Felix Haehl, said: “Professor Markoff is a highly distinguished scientist at the forefront of modern astronomy, as well as an outstanding public speaker. We are deeply honoured to have her deliver the 2024 STAG Public Lecture and we look forward to hearing about her fascinating work on black holes.”
