Our new Workload Principles are launched today (Thursday 17 October 2024). This is the result of extensive consultation with colleagues over the last year and follows their endorsement by our Trade Unions.
- All colleagues are encouraged to access the Workload Principles and the accompanying guidance so they understand expectations on all in our community
- All senior leaders and line managers are asked to consider if and how they may need to adapt their people management approach to align with these Principles. It is understood that in some areas, particularly where colleagues have large numbers of direct reports, this will take time. HR Business Partners are able to provide advice.

A positive step forward
Anne-Marie Sitton, Executive Director (HR) said:
“This is a positive step forward for the university community in relation to the hugely important and complex matter of workload. Thank you to everyone who gave their time to contribute over the last year.
“The Principles are designed to support and empower everyone to engage meaningfully with their line manager – or whoever allocates their work – enabling good conversations around workload and wellbeing. They also reinforce the importance of two-way conversations, listening and empathy.
“We will monitor their implementation and impact through a number of feedback mechanisms, including the annual staff survey which will include a new question about workload. There will be a review point at the end of the first year.”
