Diwali, also known as Deepali or Deepavali, is a celebration of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. The Festival of Lights, as it is also known, is celebrated by more than 1 billion people worldwide.
With origins in Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism and Buddhism, Diwali is a 5-day-long festival that is celebrated differently by every person and community that takes part. Celebrations include placing lights or oil lamps around homes, temples and doors, coming together with loved ones and gifting sweets such as Halwa, Laddoos and Jalebis.
Firework displays are also common during Diwali and are usually let off on the third day of the festival. This is because Diwali is dependent on the lunar cycle, and this is when the moon wanes completely and the sky is at its darkest.
However you’re celebrating the Festival of Lights this year, we wish you a Happy Diwali!
