Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10 December every year to mark the introduction of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. If you would like to be involved as part of our University of Sanctuary work, please visit our webpage or get in touch by emailing [email protected].
During the week commencing 9 December 2024, colleagues and the University of Sanctuary are marking this anniversary in a variety of ways:
- STAR (Student Action for Refugees) at SUSU are raising awareness and money for Southampton Action and the Palestine Solidarity Network. Visit @starsoton on Instagram to find out about upcoming events
- The Parkes Institute are presenting a talk entitled “Jewish Life after Stalin”, with guest speaker Gennady Estraikh on Tuesday 10 December – book here.
- The Surtierra Tour – a two-concert tribute to those forced to leave their homeland, often with sorrow. In this context, music takes on a profound meaning: healing, uniting, rooting, and building community.
Saturday 7 December, 19:30 at Avenue St Andrew’s URC – Book tickets.
Sunday 8 December, 18:30 – All Hallows Church, Whitchurch – Book tickets. - Las Gemelas: Arrival (a lexicon of unmaking) – a free exhibition at the John Hansard Gallery. Open Tuesday – Saturday, 11:00-17:00 from 5 October 2024 to 11 January 2025 .
