The University is launching another round of Black Futures scholarships to help talented UK Black students fund their PhD study at Southampton.
Studying for a PhD involves you making an independent research contribution to your chosen field. By doing a PhD at the University of Southampton, you will become part of our exciting research environment, with access to cutting-edge facilities and global collaborations.
We know that finding the funding to do a PhD can be a cause of concern, which is why we’ve created the Black Futures scholarship to help you pursue your research passion.
Black Futures scholarships for UK Black students
The prestigious Black Futures scholarship scheme is for talented UK-domiciled Black and mixed-Black heritage students who want to pursue a PhD at Southampton.
Each scholarship comprises a £20,000 per annum tax-free stipend for 3.5 years, with full UK fees paid, as well as an annual researcher training and support grant of £1,100 per year. Alongside this, you’ll benefit from a bespoke professional development programme, as well as dedicated careers training and support.
The Black Futures scholarships are open to applicants who:
- are eligible for home/UK fees
- have Black or mixed Black heritage
- and have applied (or are planning to) for a research postgraduate programme at Southampton starting in the 2025/26 academic year

The deadline to apply for a Black Futures scholarship is Friday 28 February 2025. We encourage interested applicants to apply as soon as possible, as we may close applications for the scholarship early due to limited availability.
