The University of Southampton is proud to host the impactful photo-documentary exhibition “Ukraine: The Price of Freedom” which is supported by Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Ukrainian human rights activist Oleksandra Matviychuk.
The exhibition will feature internationally award-winning photographs documenting the devastating aftermath of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022 and continues to this day. The Library has co-curated a selection of the photographs from the full exhibition with the University of Southampton Ukrainian Society.
The images include world-renowned war photographers:
- Evgen Maloletka (Pulitzer Prize winner, Guardian Photographer of the Year 2023)
- Serhiy Korovayny (James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting 2022)
- Dmytro Kozatsky (Prix de la Photographie, Paris 2022)
- Rodrigo Abd (Pulitzer Prize winner 2013, 2023)
The photographs document significant moments, such as the destruction of Mariupol, the heroism at the Azovstal steel plant, the aftermath of the Kakhovka Dam disaster, and the battle for Bakhmut. Portraits of Ukrainian soldiers, doctors, and firefighters offer a poignant glimpse into both the tragedy and resilience of those affected by war.
The full exhibition, comprising over 80 photographs, was first posted at the Art Gallery of the University of Hull (East Yorkshire) in August 2023, aiming to highlight the courage and resilient spirit of the Ukrainian people in the face of enormous adversity. Since then it has been shown in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament and hosted by the University of Chichester, Edge Hill University and Charterhouse School (Surrey) as part of an exhibition tour of UK universities.
The exhibition will be open to staff, students and the local community from 20 January to 7 February 2025 at the Level 4 Gallery in the Hartley Library. 24 hour opening is available to UoS staff and students and members of the public are welcome to visit the Hartley Library between 8:00 – 22:00, Monday – Sunday.
