University Environmental Management System Report charts our recent environmental successes

An annual report by Estates and Facilities into ways in which we have reduced our environmental impact over the past year, shows that we continue to make progress against our Sustainability Strategic Plan.

The Environmental Management System (EMS) Report reviews energy consumption, waste reduction initiatives, successes in biodiversity, species monitoring and sustainable travel. The report should be read in conjunction with the University’s Annual Sustainability Report 2023/24.

A reduction of Scope 1 emissions (those which come directly from our University) and Scope 2 emissions (from purchased electricity) against the prior year helps in our drive towards achieving net zero carbon for Scope 1 and 2 by 2030, with future projects being planned to reduce emissions further.

In the coming year, the University will focus on driving further improvement across all targets, with a specific focus on enhancing our biodiversity policy, with our green spaces mapped and improvement opportunities utilised. There will also be a focus on improving our waste and recycling offering, increasing the opportunities on campus for staff and students to recycle and reduce waste.

The report is available to read on the University’s sustainability website here.

The University has an annual audit of its Environmental Management System, with a recertification audit, every three years. The EMS Report above is used within the audit to demonstrate progress in the EMS.
