UoS Delhi update: Professor Eloise Phillips appointed as Academic Provost

Preparations continue apace for the official opening of our UoS Delhi Campus.

Most recently we have recruited to key leadership roles, launched scholarships for our Indian Delhi students, and our Vice-Chancellor Mark E. Smith made his first visit to the UoS Delhi campus.

Professor Eloise Phillips appointed Academic Provost for our Delhi Campus

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Eloise Phillips as Academic Provost for University of Southampton Delhi. Prof Phillips will take up the position in May, ahead of the campus welcoming its first students in August.

She has previously played an important role in establishing the University of Birmingham’s flagship campus in Dubai, where she is currently Head of Health, Wellbeing and Human Science programmes. Previous to this, Eloise was an Associate Dean at Aston University.

Prof Phillips is a registered nurse and highly experienced advanced clinical practitioner. Across her career she has worked globally in clinical practice, healthcare leadership and management, research, and academia.

Prof Phillips said: “I was drawn to the University of Southampton for its mission to impact and transform students’ lives and the region, which aligns with my professional values and passion.

“I am honoured to accept the role of Academic Provost and Associate Vice-President (International) at the University of Southampton Delhi and look forward to leading our international campus towards excellence in education, research, and knowledge exchange.

“India’s dynamic education landscape offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of higher education where I am committed to fostering an inclusive and innovative environment for students and staff.”

Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice-President International and Engagement at the University of Southampton, adds: “We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Eloise Phillips as Academic Provost of the University’s Delhi campus.

“Eloise joins us from the University of Birmingham Dubai campus and so has extensive experience of international campus development.

“We are looking forward to her leadership of the campus at this very exciting point in the development of the University, and in particular the launch of our Delhi campus in 2025.”

Staff recruitment

The University and our delivery partner, Oxford International Education Group, are successfully recruiting into a range of roles at UoS Delhi, including senior leadership and academic staff positions.

Along with Eloise as Academic Provost, we have also recently announced the appointments of Dr Vishal Talwar as Chief Operating Officer and Mr Pritesh Zaveri as Director for Recruitment, Marketing and Admissions. Recruitment to the roles of Director of Learning and Teaching, Heads of Programmes and academic staff roles is also progressing well.

In addition to the strong appointments already made and the solid progress achieved so far by the UoS Implementation Group and our partner OIEG, there is much to do both here and in Delhi to prepare for the opening of the campus. David Winstanley, Executive Director Student Life, has agreed to take up a 6-month role, based in Delhi, as Executive Director India Implementation. David will take up this role in March and interim arrangements will be put in place to cover his substantive post.

We are continuing to investigate other types of opportunity for UoS colleagues to support and enable delivery of the UoS experience in Delhi.

Professor Mark E. Smith makes his first visit to our Delhi Campus

In late January our Vice-Chancellor made his first visit to UoS Delhi, joined by key strategic colleagues including Vice-President for International and Engagement, Professor Andrew Atherton.

Reflecting on his first impressions of the Delhi campus, Professor Mark E. Smith said: “I was delighted to visit the campus in Delhi and see the excellent environment where our future students will be learning. The considerable interest in joining UoS Delhi from high quality prospective students and staff has been hugely encouraging and I look forward to returning to Delhi later in the year for the formal opening.”

Student recruitment and scholarships

Since launching our marketing and recruitment campaign in Autumn 2024 the interest in UoS Delhi has been high, with the first student offers being made in January.

We are also delighted to be offering prestigious scholarships to Indian undergraduate and postgraduate students for the August 2025 intake. These scholarships are designed to recognise, nurture and encourage exceptional talent:

  • The Delhi Presidential Scholarship – One undergraduate and one postgraduate fully funded competitive scholarship covering tuition fees for the entire study duration. Aspiring students must exhibit continuous academic rigour and exemplify the University’s community spirit and values to attain the scholarship and to sustain it throughout their respective course duration.
  • Future Talent Scholarships – Up to 12 competitive scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students, offering a tuition fee reduction of INR 220,000 for one year. Recipients will be awarded based on strong past academic achievements and their scholarship application.

In addition, there will be a merit bursary pool (financial aid) for undergraduate students.
