This February half-term, Southampton’s city walls will come alive with City Reflections, an inspiring projection showcase celebrating many local legends – everyday heroes whose stories reflect the heart and soul of Southampton. Each night from 14 – 23 February, the projection will light up at 18:00 to 21:00 at The Esplanade, Westquay. The projections will be looping continuously so you can visit at any time.
City Partners
Jane Falkingham, Vice-President Engagement and International, said:
“City Reflections is a superb way of celebrating those people who have made Southampton the city it is today, including many associated with the University, and I encourage colleagues to experience the show. Our University has an important civic role in connecting communities through culture, education and enterprise, and this show is the result of a project driven by Southampton Forward, of which Sue Littlemore, our Director of Civic University, is a trustee.”
Co-created by the community
Each featured person was nominated by the people of Southampton during a campaign from August to September 2024, which asked, “Who’s your community legend?” This project is a celebration of these inspiring individuals and their contributions. The content for the installation was captured by students from Southampton Solent University, adding a unique and creative perspective to the stories. While the installation highlights many stories, it also acknowledges countless others making a difference every day.
More than a light show
Although the main event is the centrepiece projection and soundscape in Westquay, there are also additional light shows at local community hubs, including:
- MP3 Building, Mansel Park Pavilion (Millbrook) – Friday 14 February, 18:00-21:00
- HighPoint Venue (Thornhill) – Saturday 15 February, 18:00-21:00
- 29th Southampton Scout Hut (Portswood) – Sunday 16 February, 18:00-21:00
- Chamberlayne Leisure Centre (Weston) – Friday 21 February, 18:00-21:00
- St Mary’s Stadium (Northam)– Saturday 22 February, from 16:45 (outside of the stadium and viewable by the general public)
Free and open to all
City Reflections is a free outdoor event, making it accessible to everyone. Please note that an open-air installation is subject to weather conditions. We recommend dressing appropriately for the winter weather and bringing an umbrella or waterproofs, just in case. Rain or shine, the light and sound displays promise to be a memorable experience.
