The Advancing Assessment project team is proud to introduce the Assessment Consultancy within the Centre for Higher Education Practice (CHEP).
Designed to provide tailored support for academic teams, the Assessment Consultancy offers a fresh, collaborative approach to assessment, with the goal of enhancing both the student and staff experience.
Committed to advancing assessment practice
Made up of a diverse group of experts with valuable experience in various areas of assessment and feedback working with a team of trained student interns, the Assessment Consultancy offers a range of development opportunities and resources for academics and programme teams. This includes targeted Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and individualised workshops tailored to solving assessment and feedback issues.
Professor Deborah Gill, Vice President Education & Student Experience and sponsor of the Advancing Assessment project, said:
“The Assessment Consultancy provides the perfect platform for Programme teams to develop their assessment offering, creating a richer and more inclusive learning environment. It signifies our commitment to advancing assessment at Southampton, hand in hand with our students and colleagues.
Whether you’re looking to evaluate your current practices, explore innovative assessment techniques, or foster greater student engagement in the process, the Assessment Consultancy can provide the expertise and guidance to make it happen.”
Tailored support and opportunities for Continuing Professional Development
Over the coming months, the Assessment Consultancy team will offer a variety of avenues for colleagues to develop their assessment and feedback practice. This will begin with a series of workshops on key assessment themes. Two of these are now available for colleagues to book, with more to follow shortly:
Developing students’ assessment literacy to support success
In this session, we will explore ways to build a framework for students’ assessment literacy within a module. We will develop an understanding of what students’ assessment literacy means, and how we can embed support throughout a module to help students understand expectations for assessment tasks, enabling them to tackle assessment effectively. We will also discuss ways of communicating this support to students to ensure engagement. | Click here to view more detail and to book a place |
Facilitating student peer review for formative assessment and feedback
In this session, we will first briefly explore some benefits of utilising students as peer reviewers as a vehicle for formative feedback and to develop students’ academic literacies (such as assessment and feedback literacy). We will then present two models of peer review that can be adapted for use in your own assessment practice (including options for both larger and smaller cohorts), with consideration given to how we can effectively scaffold and develop students’ ability to review their peers’ work. There will also be space to ask questions and to workshop specific “use cases” for peer review that you may have in mind. | Click here to view more detail and to book a place |
Claire Hughes, Assessment Consultancy Lead, said:
“We have designed these workshops around the main themes identified from our work so far, including feedback from students as part of our co-design work.
We are looking forward to meeting a wide variety of colleagues across these sessions to support enhancements and enable discussion about good practices from across the institution.”
