Ramadan, the 10th month in the Islamic Hijri lunar-based calendar, is expected to begin on the evening of 28 February 2025 and is expected to end around 30 March 2025, followed by Eid al-Fitr. It is a time for worship, reflection, and community for Muslims. Those observing will fast from dawn until dusk, spend evenings in prayer and reflection, recite passages from the Quran, and give generously to those in need.
If you have fellow colleagues, students or friends and family who are observing Ramadan, this is a wonderful opportunity to extend your good wishes.
Supporting Colleagues and Students During Ramadan
Fasting affects individuals in different ways, so a little extra understanding and flexibility can go a long way. Here are a few ways to offer support:
- Be mindful of energy levels, especially later in the day, and where possible, allow flexibility in meetings or deadlines.
- Offer understanding if colleagues or students need adjustments to their working hours or study schedules.
- Respect prayer times, as many observing Ramadan will take short breaks for spiritual reflection.
- Acknowledge Ramadan’s significance, creating an inclusive and respectful environment.
For more guidance on how to support fasting colleagues, take a look at this useful resource, written last year: Supporting Muslims at Work During Ramadan.
Prayer and Reflection Spaces
For those observing Ramadan, the Muslim prayer room on Highfield Campus is available and maintained by the Islamic Society. Additional prayer rooms can be found at:
- Sir James Matthews Building
- University Hospital
- Quiet rooms at the National Oceanography Centre, Boldrewood Innovation Campus, and Winchester School of Art are also available for prayer and reflection.
The Faith and Reflection Centre is open to all staff and students, offering a quiet space for rest and support, regardless of belief. The chaplains are also available to listen and provide guidance.
