In Conversation with Alison Lapper MBE

Book now for an evening In Conversation with Alison Lapper MBE, hosted by Pascal Matthias, Associate Vice-President of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice at University of Southampton. This event is the latest in Pascal’s Conflict, Communication and Compassion Conversations series with leading voices.

Alison Lapper MBE is an artist, activist, television presenter, speaker and Gig-Arts Charity patron. She regularly gives talks about her life; Born with no arms and shortened legs, Alison was institutionalised at six weeks old and spent her next 17 years at Chailey Heritage in Sussex. At the age of 19, she obtained a driving licence and her own flat and began to live her daily life independently.

This conversation will be open, intimate, and honest. Disability is often misrepresented, misunderstood, or left unspoken, and language can create distances or dehumanise individuals and groups, negatively impacting on mental health. Alison and Pascal will discuss her life and how she has fought tirelessly to improve how we speak and think about disability.

Date and Time – 27 March 2025 at 19:00

Venue: Studio 1 — MAST Mayflower Studios

The conversation will be followed by audience questions and an opportunity to meet Alison briefly after the event.

Presented by John Hansard Gallery in partnership with Mayflower Studios, this event has been made possible through support from University of Southampton’s Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise.
