In this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject, just announced, three of our subjects are ranked within the Top 50 universities in the world (three fewer than last year) and 12 of our subjects are ranked within the Top 100, the same as last year.
The subjects which are ranked in the Top 50 are Nursing, which is ranked 13th and is Southampton’s best ranked subject; Archaeology ranked 36th, the same as last year, and Earth and Marine Sciences which has fallen two places to 40th.

Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith said: “Congratulations to Nursing which has maintained its position in the Top 50 again this year and to Archaeology which is ranked 36th. I’m encouraged to see that we still have so many disciplines in the Top 100. Such league tables are somewhat volatile, with ups and downs in individual subjects, but overall we can be pleased with the results and I would like to thank staff and students for their excellent contributions.”
The QS World University Rankings by Subject are a yearly ranking of universities in specific subject areas. The rankings are based on research, academic reputation, and employer reputation. The rankings are intended to help students find the top universities in their chosen subject.
