I recently started up my own business, Big Green Plan, which specialises in corporate responsibility and sustainable communications in small and medium sized businesses. Big Green Plan was the Winner of a Shell LiveWIRE Grand Ideas Award.

The field trips have been amazing. We went to Tenerife in second year and I’ve got memories from that trip that I don’t think I’ll be able to top; it was brilliant.

The lecturers are always incredibly engaging and it is clear they are truly passionate about their subjects. This makes a big difference to the lecture experience.

University for me was also about gaining independence and I have been able to achieve this, particularly at Southampton, by having the opportunity to study abroad.

I was able to choose a variety of really interesting modules - from the political landscape of the Middle East, to the science of shopping.

I've worked on reducing the environmental impact of major award winning projects in the Middle East, the length and breadth of Britain and I can't help but think the University of Southampton might have had a little something to do with it!

I am an Environmental Consultant and also a business partner in my own Company.

The Geography department and combined Oceanography department were very strong, particularly in terms of research, which I thought would give me a fantastic platform for my academia alongside the opportunity to become involved in extracurricular activities.

Throughout my BSc course the University staff was generous with its support as were my fellow students, despite the fact that I was nearly three times their age.

I am River Programmes Co-ordinator for Thames21, an environmental charity which works with volunteers across London to improve London’s waterways.

I enjoyed the choice of modules; you could do anything from climate change, to development and inequality in cities - you really get to shape the degree the way you want to.

The modules looked (and were) great, the staff were approachable, and the opportunities that arose from the course all attracted me, but it was the University (and its campus) as a whole that made me fall in love with Southampton

Human Geography is very broad, so I have learnt about economic geography, cultural geography, tourism and many other areas. I find that you gain a broad general knowledge about the world, which I think every human being needs.

My joint honours degree incorporated and allowed me to do 50 per cent of my modules at the National Oceanography Centre, giving me experience in the geological field.

The wide range of activities and modules as well as my dissertation stood me in great standing to get my first job with the RSPB on Ramsey Island.

Journalism is about getting to the bottom of the facts, fast, and then communicating them effectively – skills my Geography degree played a huge part in honing.

I believe it was the firm foundations and expert help and support provided by the University of Southampton that helped me get started in my career.

I now work for the Met Office as a military weather forecaster at RAF Benson.

Having a relevant degree from a good university definitely makes you more attractive to employers, so it’s a great starting point. In my career so far my knowledge of ecosystem services, climate change, development, conservation and policy has been required for the job.

Each summer I was able to gain work experience all of which helped to ensure a consultancy career was for me.
