Our International Women’s Day celebrations are underway

International Women’s Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.

Today sees the start of a week and more of related events here at the University of Southampton, mixing the informative, the reflective, the challenging and the celebratory.

The 2015 programme features an exceptional range of activities devised by, and for, students and staff through various groups and networks. You can find talks, workshops, sports activities, serious business and plenty of fun stuff, including:

  • Empowering women in Kenya and Uganda (11 March), and Climbing the career ladder in STEMM (19 March). See the Diversity webpages for more details, or contact Jane Davy.
  • WiSET Campbell Lecture (18 March) with guest speakers Professor Jane Francis (British Antarctic Survey) and Suw Charman-Anderson (Open Rights Group). Find out more and book your place.
  • Secrets of stress-free life (12 March).  An uncomplicated guide to making stress your friend. Find out more and book your place.
  • Calling the shots (12 March). 50% of students at film school are female, yet only a tiny fraction later achieve technical or directing roles. Find out more and book your place.
  • Buns in ovens (13 March). Our medical and cultural depiction of pregnancy is that of the ‘baby in the tummy’ or the ‘bun in the oven’; a pregnant woman is a mere container within which a foetus resides. But is there more to pregnancy than bun-baking?  Find out more and book your place.
  • Free fitness classes at Jubilee Sports Centre, all week. Find out more.
  • Gender equality: making a difference (13 March) is now fully booked, but to keep in the loop, please add your name to the waiting list.

For a full list of events, visit the International Women’s Week webpages. You can also find out more information about activities throughout the next two weeks on the SUSU Facebook Event.
