Many students seek a part-time job whilst studying at University, whether to develop their skills and employability or to support their finances. There are many avenues to explore when looking for a role.

SURecruit – This service is brought by your Students’ Union to help you find paid casual work. Working in partnership with the Careers and Employability Service at the University, SURecuit aims to support you to achieve economic independence whilst gaining valuable work experience. They work strategically to identify external employers that will enhance your career prospects. SURecruit is a free recruitment service, which has been developed exclusively for you. Vacancies advertised:

Paid part-time, seasonal, temporary and term-time work

Paid summer and vacation work

Paid permanent part time positions

Temp Bank – This on campus service provides a number of part-time jobs throughout the year and can offer students and graduates the perfect job role to fit alongside your studies.

Jobs Board – The Jobs Board on MyCareer is updated daily and features hundreds of vacancies for part-time work.

Union Southampton  – This can be a great place to work alongside your studies. Union Southampton often recruit for part-time vacancies in the bar and retail outlets as well as administration roles as and when required.

Student Consultancy – Develop your business skills by delivering solutions to local organisations. Work in a team of student consultants on an 8 week project during term-time. Training is provided with £250 payment for completed projects. They have started accepting applications for the next semester.

2010 study involving six UK universities found that 51 per cent of recent graduates found volunteer work helped them secure a paid job. Volunteer work offers a wide range of benefits – rapid skill development, new social connections and the feeling of societal impact – to name just a few. We have a compiled a list to get you started.

The Volunteering Bank is a great way to search and apply for a wide range of volunteering opportunities within a charity or third sector organization. This can be accessed through MyCareer.
