University to showcase aerospace and defence expertise at Farnborough

Aerospace is an important area for Southampton, and Research and Innovation Services (RIS) are coordinating presentation of our extensive research at the biennial Farnborough International Airshow, from Monday 11 – Sunday 17 July.

The Airshow provides many opportunities to strengthen our industry relationships and display and promote our expertise to thousands of attendees. We aim to consolidate an already strong research position and win new business.

Based in the Innovation Zone (Hall 3, Stand 21), our exhibition will focus on three main themes: autonomy, sensors and cyber security. Emphasising these themes will enable us to show the industry relevance of the expertise within our strategic research groups for Autonomous Systems and Monitoring of Engineered and Natural Systems Using Sensors (MENSUS), as well as promoting our broader cyber and security capabilities, including the recently established Cyber Security Academy.

The University is included in this year’s Farnborough flying display, where a Southampton Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) will beam live photography onto TV screens across the exhibition site.

During Futures Day (Friday 15 July), the event will welcome over 5,000 younger people, giving them the chance to view exciting career opportunities available in the Aerospace and Defence sectors. Expert talks, educational activities, competitions and group work will all be on offer. As part of Futures Day, we will be demonstrating the University’s Human Flying Wing Suit and showcasing our flight test simulation, which are both part of the PRiME project.

With a new aeronautical electronics degree programme launching shortly at the University, the Airshow will provide considerable exposure to industry and prospective students. In order to identify and support home grown Hampshire talent, we’ve invited local schools, colleges, universities and youth groups to visit our stand and find out more about our Aerospace degree courses and world-leading research.
