Extended Carers’ Leave Pilot

From 1 October 2016, the University will pilot an Extended Carers’ Leave Policy for 12 months, which sets out additional leave provisions to support employees with caring commitments.

people

This policy will allow an employee paid time off of up to two weeks in the 2016/17 leave year and can be used to:

  • Look after a dependant who is recovering from a serious illness; or
  • Look after a dependent who is terminally ill; or
  • Settle a dependent into a care home

To be eligible the employee must have significant caring responsibilities for a dependant who is unable to care for him or herself (defined as a Spouse or civil partner, partner (including same-sex partner), child or parent of the employee or any member of the employee’s household who is not their employee, tenant, lodger or boarder) and have at least 26 weeks continuous service with the University.

Managers should ensure that the leave is formally recorded in MyHR Dashboard under ‘Record an absence’.

Following completion of the pilot, an assessment will be made on whether to permanently adopt the policy.

For more information and a copy of the policy, please visit the HR website, or contact Ask HR [email protected] or phone ext 27547.

Please note that the Extended Carers’ Leave pilot is separate to the University’s compassionate leave policy, details of which can be found here.
