The Extended Carers’ Leave Policy is to be permanently adopted by the University after a successful pilot between October 2016 and September 2017.
The University recognises that caring can be a stressful experience. Without the right support, the challenge of combining caring commitments with work can become too difficult to manage.
The Extended Carers’ Leave Policy sets out additional leave provisions to support employees with these caring commitments.
The policy allows an employee up to two weeks’ paid time off, in any one leave year, which can be used to:
- look after a dependant who is recovering from a serious illness; or
- look after a dependant who is terminally ill; or
- settle a dependant into a care home
To be eligible, the employee must have significant caring responsibilities for a dependant who is unable to care for him or herself. The dependant is defined as a spouse or civil partner (including same-sex partner), child or parent of the employee or any member of the employee’s household who is not their employee, tenant, lodger or boarder. The employee must have completed at least 26 weeks continuous service with the University.
For more information and a copy of the policy, please visit the HR website, or contact Ask HR [email protected] or phone ext. 27547.
Please note that the Extended Carers’ Leave policy is separate to the University’s compassionate leave policy, details of which can be found here.
