Recognising alumni volunteers and their impact this Volunteers’ Week

This week is Volunteers’ Week (1 – 7 June) across the UK and we would like to thank all alumni volunteers for giving their time to the University this year.

The invaluable support of our alumni community from across the globe has made a tremendous impact on the University. Arguably the University’s best asset, this talented pool of ambassadors and volunteers contribute enormously to multiple strategic areas of our institution.

Examples include:

  • Student recruitment – telling their stories to prospective students and attending recruitment fairs and talks across the world;
  • Widening participation – supporting our Advance programme by inspiring talented Year 9 students;
  • Student employability – mentoring students with career advice, offering placements, and delivering career talks.

Their actions aid current and future Southampton students, and in turn, also strengthen the bonds that alumni have with the University, often leading to further support such as philanthropy and supporting research and industrial connections.

Volunteers’ Week is our opportunity to say thank you. All this week we will be sharing volunteering stories on the Alumni Facebook and Twitter channels. These stories will showcase some of the hard work that alumni have done this year. Follow along with the hashtag #VolunteersWeek for stories from us and other charities from around the UK.

We are so grateful to many staff members who are also part of our alumni community and have given their time. You are making a difference. Did you know that around 30% of our staff are also alumni? Something we are very proud of.

Over the coming year, the generosity of all alumni will be needed more than ever before. Maybe you can help? Whether it is sharing your career path, meeting with students, or completing a profile, we would love to hear from you.

In a few weeks, we will also unveil a new way you can give valuable support to students and recent graduates online. This exciting opportunity can be done anywhere around the world, and even from the comfort of home. Keep an eye out for more information!
